Abstract:		 Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 3 hectares on agricultural land to the east of Chelmsford, Essex, to provide information about the archaeological potential of land where it is proposed to build a new 400kV electricity substation. The survey has identified only anomalies caused by geological variation, 19th century boundaries and modern activity. No anomalies of obvious archaeological potential have been recorded. There is no indication from any other source to suggest that the magnetic data provides anything other than an accurate representation of the sub-surface conditions within the proposed development area. Therefore, based solely on the results and interpretation of the data, the archaeological potential of the site is considered to be low, corroborating the conclusions of a previous desk-based assessment.
