Abstract:
Ground-works for the installation of new services in in Tom Quad, Christ Church were the subject of an archaeological watching brief by John Moore Heritage Services. These new services were installed in narrow trenches. Artefactual evidence recovered for late Saxon occupation in the area, and burials and other traces of the precinct of St Frideswide's Priory. Possible traces of the St Frideswide's civil law school were also detected, along with a hitherto unknown section of footings for a bastion associated with the medieval city wall. Important evidence was also recovered regarding the structure and layout of medieval buildings and streets pre-dating the foundation of Christ Church. In addition to the medieval remains, previously unknown evidence was also recorded for the construction of Tom Quadrangle, the reconstruction of Peckwater Inn and the building of Peckwater Quad. The most significant of these remains were probably large semi-circular footings identified just north of Fell Tower that may have been an important component of Wolsey's planned Great Chapel, the construction of which was never completed.
