Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken between May and August 2015 by University of Leicester Archaeological Services on behalf of Everards Limited. The fieldwork was a post-determination requirement on a proposed planning application for commercial development on land south of Soar Valley Way, Enderby, Leicestershire, in order to mitigate the potential impact of the development on such remains. The archaeological excavation revealed evidence for archaeological activity, probably of stock agricultural character of transitional late Late Iron Age to early Roman date. This agricultural activity appeared to be concentrated in the western part of the site, with a possible concentration of Roman activity centred on the south-west corner. Archaeological features included a small rectangular stock enclosure associated with a possible watering hole feature and quarry pits with a trackway likely leading west to link with the Fosse Way. A number of ditches identified in the vicinity may have been functionally linked to this arrangement, possibly as drove roads. Environmental evidence provided clear indications of an open pastoral landscape devoid of human habitation. Evidence produced by the excavation for livestock farming is likely connected with Late Iron Age/ early Roman settlement known via excavation west of the site. The absence of archaeological evidence in the eastern area is possibly explained by a variation in the geology between the upslope, more permeable geology of sands and gravels (hence more suited to settlement observed to the west, and as such atypical of the locality) and the heavier, alluvial geology characterising the eastern part of the site. A unique Iron Age bark shield was recovered from waterlogged deposits in a waterhole. |
