Abstract:
A programme of historic building recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust at the The Rising Sun and Maponite buildings, 3 Hythe Station Road, Colchester, Essex in November 2018. A total of nine buildings were recorded on the site, ranging in date from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. The most prominent buildings on the site are range of mid 19th-century warehouses, one of which may have been a bonded warehouse. The earliest building on the site is a late 18th-century public-house, the Rising Sun. All the buildings have a large amount of modern alterations, most prominently in the warehouses, which have had modern floors inserted, with stairways and lift shafts added. The Rising Sun has had a modern bar and W.Cs added, but still retains a selection original Georgian features, including brick fireplaces and vertically-planked doors.
