Abstract:
Watching brief on groundworks at Grange Court, Arley. An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Arley Grange, Upper Arley, Worcestershire (NGR SO 76437 80311). It was commissioned by David Vice of EMMAUS Consulting Ltd, on behalf of The Roger and Douglas Turner Charitable Trust, to monitor groundworks including single storey extensions and alterations to the current property. Planning permission was granted subject to a programme of archaeological works. Arley Grange is a Grade II listed building and is also registered with the Worcestershire Historic Environment Record (WSM09659). A Historic England Level 2 building record was carried out prior to any building alterations. Excavations for drainage around the building and a reduced level excavation in the footprint of the new single extensions were observed. The demolition of a small, modern extension on the west side of the Grange and surrounding curtain wall was also monitored. A sandstone and lime mortar wall foundation was recorded in the drainage trench at the southwest corner of the Arley Grange, connecting it to the outbuilding in the southwest. This wall is depicted on the 1838 parish map and 1884 1st Edition OS Map of the area and has been removed by the time of the 1905 OS map. In the area to the west of the current building, modern wall foundations and a concrete water storage chamber truncated the natural ground, overlain by modern yard and floor surfacing. No other evidence of earlier buildings, deposits or finds were recorded, although later 19th and 20th Century deposits and finds relating to modern garden features and horticultural use were also present.
