Abstract:
The excavations identified a triple ring ditch monument probably dating to the middle/late Neolithic period. The monument comprised three concentric ditches with an overall diameter of 23m. The central ditch enclosed an area c 7.5m in diameter with a possible narrow entrance at the north. There were no internal features but after the inner ditch had partially silted up a pit had been dug across the entrance which had then been densely packed with disarticulated human bone. Only selected bones, particularly the femur with lesser quantities of the other major limb bones, had been collected for deposition. The large quantity of skeletal material represents at least 130 individuals and intial radiocarbon samples give a date between 3360-3100 cal BC for the bone. The middle and outer ditches had entrances on their north-west side. The entrance for the middle ditch remained unaltered but the outer entrance had been deliberately dug away in order to close the circuit. The outer ditch had a series of oval depressions around the base of its circumference suggesting that it had originally been dug as a series of pits. Within the fills of the outer ditch the deliberate deposition of red deer antlers and disarticulated human remains had taken place. The presence of sherds of Collared Urn within the upper fills of the ditch indicates early Bronze Age activity in the vicinity of the monument. An undated crouched inhumation burial was located 30m to the south of the monument.
