Abstract: |
An intermittent archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks at Cutts Close, Oakham, Rutland between 27th of June and 26th of July 2018 by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS). The site forms part of the Scheduled Monument Area of Oakham Castle and lies within the historic core of the town. Work took place to erect a new vehicle barrier gate in the north-eastern corner of Cutts Close and to renew an existing tarmac pathway running from east to west along the southern edge of Cutts Close. A deposit of mid yellow-brown silty clay of unknown depth was observed in both the gate and pathway areas of the watching brief. No archaeological features were exposed during the work. |
