Abstract: |
The site comprises two arable fields located north of Grange Road, Netley Abbey, covering an area of 3.5 ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken on the 13 and 19 March 2019 has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies across the site. The survey has successfully detected anomalies that are tentatively been interpreted as archaeological origin. Recti-linear and linear anomalies are noted in the dataset that could indicate former enclosures and undocumented field boundaries. While no exact date can be determined, it is likely any features associated with these anomalies would pertain to the medieval period and be further evidence of the medieval agricultural activity noted in the surrounding landscape. It is also plausible that these anomalies indicate wider settlement activity and are associated with the medieval village of 'Old Netley', some 1.4 km to the north-east. However, further investigation may be required to determine an exact origin of such features. The remaining anomalies can be attributed to natural geological variation, agricultural activity or modern debris littered across the site. |
