Abstract: |
A trial trench and archaeological monitoring were undertaken by Archaeological Services Durham University within the walled garden at Wynyard Hall, County Durham in 2016 in relation to construction of a new cookery school. Foundations for 19th century greenhouses were recorded, with ancillary structures including a boiler house for these greenhouses, recorded against the outside of the garden wall. Fragmentary remains of earlier greenhouses were identified below the 19th century ones. Soil samples contained material typical of post-medieval sites, although one contained a residual grain of spelt wheat, typical of Iron Age or Roman sites. |
