Abstract:
A desk-based assessment and programme of archaeological monitoring was carried out for the Caledonian Cheese Company in respect of a proposed effluent pipeline running between Stranraer and Portpatrick, Dumfries and Galloway. The desk-based assessment revealed some 34 heritage sites within the terrestrial and maritime buffers of the proposed route. The majority of the proposed route sat within the cutting of a former railway line and as such the potential impact to surrounding archaeological sites was low. While the majority of the proposed route for the pipeline sat within the cutting of the former railway line, a small number of sections fell outwith the line and into previously undisturbed ground. Based on the presence of known archaeological sites within the surrounding area and also the nature of the landscape itself, three of these sections were subject to archaeological monitoring. The monitoring works were designed to mitigate any adverse impact on the archaeological remains within the development area. No significant archaeological features were revealed throughout the course of the monitoring works. The only features discovered related to modern 19th to 20th century activity within the area.
