Abstract: |
A repair project involving the replacement of 20th-century roof structures at Killerton House revealed late 18th-century roof structures underlying these. These were recorded prior to the erection of a new roof structure and the development of the present south range and service wing of the mansion re-interpreted in the light of the findings. It was concluded that the main range of the house was earlier than has been assumed and probably represents a mid 18th-century attempt to rebuild the late 16th- or early 17th-century house which was at first abandoned, and subsequently resumed, after the failure of a project for a larger house in another part of the park |
