Abstract: |
The Marine Aggregate Industry Archaeological Protocol is a procedure to account for unexpected archaeological discoveries found during aggregate extraction on dredging vessels or during the processing of aggregate at the wharves. The British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) and Historic England put in place the Protocol, developed by Wessex Archaeology in 2005, which advises industry staff on how to protect and report on our submerged heritage. The Crown Estate joined the scheme as a funding partner in 2009. The Protocol states that all finds of archaeological interest discovered within active dredging areas as licensed by The Crown Estate should be reported using the Implementation Service run by Wessex Archaeology. The Implementation Team are responsible for researching and preparing a report that is disseminated to the aggregate company responsible for the find along with alerting, as appropriate, Historic England via the National Record of the Historic Environment, the Receiver of Wreck and the Ministry of Defence of the discovery. The Protocol also has an awareness programme where members of the implementation team visit wharves and vessels to conduct archaeological training and a bi-annual newsletter, Dredged Up, is produced and sent to all stakeholders along with the project's Annual Report. Any archaeological material found is generally retained at the individual wharves unless thought to be of significant archaeological importance, whereby it is transferred to Wessex Archaeology for conservation and further analysis. Multiple find types of varying significance are discovered. All finds discovered during a reporting year (October to October) can be found in the appendices of each Annual Report. |
