Abstract: |
the construction of a dwelling at Collingwood, Buckfast Road, Buckfast, Devon. Collingwood comprises a triangular plot of land formerly occupied by a bungalow and associated gardens. The site is close to Buckfast Abbey, which originally dates from the early 11th century. The position of the site lies within, what would have been, its outer court, where agricultural and industrial buildings would have been situated. Immediately to the west of the site the 13th century boundary of the outer court has been plotted. This is based on the exposure of a bank and ditch during the construction of the road to the north in the 1980s. The 1844 Buckfastleigh parish tithe map depicts the site as within a wider open field, the western boundary of which has been identified as forming part of the abbey's outer court boundary. The line of this can be traced as extending to the north and south in the field arrangement. |
