Abstract: |
A trench-based evaluation was undertaken within the Fellow's Garden at Jesus College, Cambridge, in advance of the redevelopment of the Porter's Lodge. The presence of a medieval horticultural soil was identified, associated with the former Benedictine nunnery of St Radegund. Subsequently, at the end of the 15th century when the nunnery was converted into Jesus College, the site appears to have been landscaped and the ground level raised. Further landscaping/planting bed deposits were also encountered of 19th century date, attesting to the long-lived usage of the area as a garden. |
