Abstract:
On 7 and 8 October 2013 Cotswold Archaeology attended during the installation of a water main in Castle Street, Cirencester, Gloucestershire (see Fig 1). This work constituted permitted development under the terms of the Town and Country Planning Act, being exempt from the requirement for planning permission under the General Development Order. The archaeological attendance was commissioned by Thames Water following concerns from a member of the public that a wall had been exposed during the excavations. The excavated trench was approximately 2.5m in depth and was inaccessible due to the ingress of groundwater (see Photo 1). Although the majority of the trench sections were obscured by shuttering, where visible it appeared to be excavated through modern deposits associated with the construction of the modern road and various service trenches, and natural limestone brash. No features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed within the groundworks and no artefactual material was recovered. It is therefore postulated that the suspected wall was a compacted layer of limestone rubble located approximately 0.4m below present ground level that was most probably associated with the construction of the modern road.
