Abstract: |
The excavation covered 7.8ha prior to residential development. The earliest activity identified on site is represented by substantial colluvial deposits formed by hill-wash collecting on the hill sides and at the base of the slopes. This comprised of multiple episodes of low and high energy depositions, creating rills and hill gullies eroding into the bedrock that had subsequently filled as a result of changes in land-use. Contained within these deposits were material culture dated to both the Roman and Medieval periods. The main periods presented are ascribed to the Roman and Medieval periods. Evidence for late Roman (2nd-4th centuries) occupation is represented by a building foot-print for a timber-framed structure and associated drainage system; a retaining wall with land terracing and boundary ditch. These features are associated with farmstead complex previous excavated by Cotswold Archaeology in 2018, located to the immediate south of the excavation Area A. The medieval occupation consists of activity relating to a mixed agricultural and industrial landscape, comprised of a sub-rectangular stone-built structure with a corn dryer, a track or Holloway and potential evidence for mineral extraction. |
