Abstract:
St Mary's Church is a 'closed church' and is currently in private ownership. As such, the church, churchyard, and the burials associated with them, are protected by a Ministry of Justice 'Dispensing Order' issued under S.78 of the Church of England's Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011. An Amending Dispensing Order under S.78(4) of the above Mission and Pastoral Measure was granted by the Ministry of Justice, allowing the works to proceed with due regard to the human remains and provision for their re-interment. Bishop's Directions for the re-interment of such remains in the churchyard have also been obtained. The works involved the monitoring of the excavation of a drainage trench and a soakaway on the north side of the church. The trench on the southern side of the church, which was also to have been monitored, had been excavated and backfilled prior to the arrival of the archaeologist on the site. The present project involved monitoring the groundworks for new drainage, though only the works on the north side of the church were monitored, and the excavation of a soakaway in the churchyard, to the north-east of the North Transept. These works revealed the foundations for the north wall of the nave, which consisted of roughly coursed sandstone, which appeared to sit on larger stone blocks.. These were recorded and photographed. No cut graves or other significant features were encountered during the groundworks in the churchyard, but the works revealed a layer of topsoil above a cemetery soil over 1m in depth. A small quantity of disarticulated human bone was recovered during the course of the groundworks. This was collected and handed to the vicar for reburial.
