Abstract: |
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake the archaeological strip, map and sample of 0.7ha of land at Trethurffe Manor, Ladock, Cornwall in advance of a housing development. This phase of work was informed by a geophysical survey (Bampton 2017) that identified two ring ditches. The excavations confirmed the existence of two Late Iron Age roundhouses, as dated by a small assemblage South West Decorated Ware and the radiocarbon determinations. Both roundhouses were encompassed by ring ditches between 11.50m and 14.50m in diameter. The interiors contained postholes and pits but clear post rings were not identified. One of the houses featured a porch. Part of a severely truncated Middle Bronze Age sunken featured roundhouse was also located and dated by radiocarbon determination. Pits and burnt pits, of Middle Bronze Age and Late Iron Age date, were also identified. Medieval and later ditched boundaries belonging to historic fields and a possible routeway between Trefurffe Manor and the church were also investigated. |
