Abstract:
This project comprises an archaeological desk-based assessment prepared to inform a proposed development at the Foss Bank Sainsburys/Go Outdoors site at Jewbury, York, located at National Grid Reference SE 60806 52301. The site represents an area outside of the early historic core of York which contains some evidence for activity from the Roman period onwards. The southern part of the site is first known to have been developed during the medieval period as a Jewish cemetery (partly excavated by the York Archaeological Trust during the 1980s), whilst the remainder appears to have been cultivated until the 19th Century. By the mid-19th Century the northern part of the site had been developed as a gas works, remaining in this use until the mid-20th Century. The central part of the site was used as a hospital, while the southernmost part, the location of the medieval Jewish cemetery, contained housing. The site was redeveloped during the early 1980s.
