Abstract: |
The evaluation has shown evidence for two ditches, both orientated broadly east - west. The exact function of ditchs remains unclear; however the smaller ditch may have been an early attempt at establishing a boundary marker along the contour line defining the break of slope of the ridgeline upon which the Site is positioned prior to the implementation of the larger ditch at a later date. Although no clearly defined relationship between the ditches could be established during the course of the evaluation it is possible the a chalk slump deposit in the larger ditch may have formed as a result of the truncation of the southern edge of the smaller ditch when the larger ditch was implemented. The larger ditch also follows the same contour line. It appears likely that the ditch was excavated to re-establish the boundary imposed by the smaller ditch along this ridgeline. Pottery within the colluvial deposits within the ditch have suggested a Late Iron Age date. The pottery appears to have migrated into the feature from activity further upslope to the north of the Site. |
