Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by NuStar Energy L.P. to provide a methodology and protocol for archaeological discoveries to meet the requirements for archaeological monitoring and mitigation satisfying Historic England requirements as part of the licencing by the Marine Management Organisation (Licence number: L/2017/00301/1) for capital dredging at Jetty 1 on the river Thames. The dredged area was approximately 200 m by 20 m in size with dredged material placed into barges for discharge at Land and Water Remediation's site, at Rainham Lagoons. The target depth was 12.8m with current minimum depth in the berthing pocket of 10.8m. Maximum dredge depth was 13.1-13.3 m depending on dredging tolerance with a maximum of 2.5 metres of sediment to be removed. A UXO survey was carried out by divers prior to the dredging commencing. The divers all received a protocol awareness training session where they were taught how to identify archaeological material and what to do if any was encountered during the survey. A protocol produced by Wessex Archaeology set out a framework to facilitate the reporting of material of archaeological interest that was discovered during the dredging works by on-board operatives. An archaeologist was on-site to monitor the processing of material at Rainham Lagoons. Half the total load (10,000 tonnes) of dredged material was visually inspected as it came through a screener fitted with a 90 mm mesh. None of the 21 finds recovered pre-date the 20th century. |
