Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Royal HaskoningDHV on behalf of Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited (DOW) to conduct an archaeological assessment of geophysical data obtained over the site of the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm and its associated export cable route. An archaeological interpretation of sidescan sonar, magnetometer and multibeam bathymetry data was undertaken. The Offshore Wind Farm is situated approximately 32 km offshore of Cromer on the north Norfolk coast. It comprises 67 wind turbine locations and their associated inter-array cables. A 500 m corridor for the inter-array cables and a 150 m radius buffer zone for each of the turbines was assessed. A 500 m corridor was assessed for the export cable route. The archaeological assessment of the 2013 geophysical survey data classified six features as A1 (of high archaeological importance), including a small wreck site in the export cable corridor. These were recommended for Archaeological Exclusion Zones (AEZs). One A3 record (a site recorded in the UKHO that has not been rediscovered through geophysical survey) was in an area not covered by the geophysical datasets, so its previous AEZ was recommended to be retained. The remaining 906 geophysical anomalies within the study area were classified as A2s (uncertain origin of possible archaeological interest).
