Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd conducted an archaeological excavation on land at Reading Girls School, Berkshire, in response to a planning condition for the construction of a new school. The investigation revealed prehistoric occupation of the land during the Bronze Age, with the presence of a post-holes defining a timber built roundhouse and isolated potentially associated features. The structure appeared to represent an isolated unenclosed home or farmstead. Flint debitage was recovered from plough subsoils across the entire site. Evidence for past agricultural activity, dating from both the Iron Age / Romano-British and the post-medieval periods were identified in the form of ditches forming land divisions and post-holes forming probable field boundaries and fence-lines. Metalworking slag was recovered from subsoil deposits indicating the presence of such activity in proximity to the site. Undated features identified on the site, may indicate agricultural use of the land between the prehistoric and post-medieval periods. Artefacts recovered during the fieldwork included flint tools, debitage, iron working residues and quantities of pottery dating from the Bronze Age to Modern period. |
