Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd conducted an archaeological excavation on land to the north of Allimore Lane, Alcester, in response to a condition placed on outline planning consent for the residential development of the site. The investigation revealed evidence for Iron Age settlement and agricultural activity, comprising roundhouses, fences and trackways, field boundaries, quarry pits, beamslot structures, and numerous small external post-built agricultural buildings. This is of particular interest as limited evidence for Iron Age activity has been uncovered in Alcester. Evidence for Romano-British settlement and agriculture was also revealed, potentially with some transitional Iron Age / Romano-British activity. This provides an indication of how the landscape around the centre of Roman Alcester was organized and how it may have been impacted on by the Roman Conquest.
