Abstract:		 Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 9 hectares on land north of Holwell Lane, Cheddar, which has planning permission for a new housing development. The survey has successfully evaluated the proposed development area (PDA) and has identified part of a well-defined, localised and probable double-ditched 'enclosure' of unknown date in the centre of the site. Parallel linear anomalies immediately east of the 'enclosure' may define a trackway which may be associated with the enclosure. Due to the partial and discontinuous nature of the anomalies an archaeological interpretation is considered to be probable rather than definite. Across the remainder of the site anomalies caused by recent agricultural activity (field drains) and modern activity (haul road and railway line) are identified. Overall, the archaeological potential of the PDA is assessed as moderate in and around the enclosure, but low for the majority.
