Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering 69 hectares, immediately east of Whitchurch (Horseworld), to provide information on the archaeological potential of this proposed development area (PDA), prior to the possible submission of a planning application for a residential and local infrastructure development. Anomalies indicative of a probable Late Iron Age/early Roman period settlement (farmstead) and field system (confirmed by an earlier trial trench evaluation of part of the PDA), which extends more than 650m from north to south and 400m from east to west through the centre of the site, has been identified. The archaeology is characterised as an elongated complex comprising multiple enclosures of varying size and shape linked by a trackway together with an area containing numerous discrete anomalies which may be indicative of industrial activity. A field system is identified in the wider landscape. The survey has clearly demonstrated the extent of archaeological activity partially revealed by the earlier archaeological work thereby successfully evaluating the archaeological potential of the PDA. On the basis of the survey, the central, southern and western areas of the PDA are assessed as of moderate to high archaeological potential, while the northern and eastern areas are assessed as low. |
