Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering 63 hectares in the Charlton Park Estate, near Malmesbury, on land where it is proposed to site the Five Lanes Solar Project. The site of a proposed substation for the solar farm was also surveyed. The results of the survey will provide information in support of a planning application. In the centre of the site two large enclosures of completely different morphology with completely differing levels of internal division are identified. Both enclosures are constrained by an outer ditch confirming likely contemporaneity. It is possible that one enclosure is for stock and the other for human settlement. This complex was not previously known. Elsewhere, two partial round barrows are also identified, one of which was previously identified as a cropmark, as well as other discrete and linear anomalies which are of possible archaeological origin. Linear anomalies indicative of ridge and furrow cultivation are ubiquitous across the site. The archaeological potential is assessed as high in the area of the enclosures and moderate in the area around the barrows, However, most of the site is devoid of any archaeological anomalies and is therefore assessed as being of low potential.
