Abstract:
An archaeological and geoarchaeological evaluation was undertaken at Woollards Field, Falmer, East Sussex. The work was undertaken between the 15th and 28th May 2008 on behalf of East Sussex County Council. Six trenches, measuring 20m by 2m and two trenches measuring 15m by 9m were excavated across the area of proposed development. The underlying natural was encountered at a maximum height of 49.957m OD to the north of the area of investigation (Trench 6) falling away to 46.058 m OD to the south of the area of investigation (Trench 2). Six linear features, representing seasonal water flow, ran across the site in a north-east to south-west orientation along the base of the valley. A single naturally occurring feature lay to the south-east of the site. Evidence of truncation of the site due to the construction of the railway line and A270 was found to the south-east and north-west respectively. Geoarchaeological evaluation comprised two large excavations through the complete sedimentary sequence providing a broad east-west section through the valley bottom. The results showed the site to preserve an extensive sedimentary sequence covering phases of Pleistocene melt-water flow, periglacial solifluction and loess deposition. A Holocene buried soil was located at the top of the Pleistocene gravels and this in turn was covered by further Holocene colluvium. A number of flint flakes were recovered from the Pleistocene gravels indicating the presence of human activity at the site or in its immediate environs during the Pleistocene.
