Abstract: |
A building survey to English Heritage Level 3 standard was carried out on the existing property at 1 Cricketfield Road, Seaford, East Sussex prior to its demolition in advance of the construction of new houses on the site. The survey recorded the external fabric and internal arrangement of rooms, and has helped to establish the history of this unusual house which was originally built in 1892. Two archaeological evaluation trenches were excavated in the garden to the south of the house. These encountered a wide range of artefacts ranging including prehistoric flintwork, a Roman coin and Medieval pottery. The excavations revealed a deep stratigraphy, which included possible 17th century in-fill of the silted-up harbour, together with a chalk block constructed drain, and an area of chalk hardstanding, both undated, but possibly also of 17th century date. |
