Abstract:
This Heritage Statement has been prepared for a site at 28 South Way, Newhaven in order to establish the likely presence and importance of any archaeological remains that may be affected by the proposed conversion of a former Congregational Church to nine x two bed flats. The report has established that the site may have been agricultural farmland for a considerable period of time, which most probably encompassing the Roman, Medieval and Post Medieval periods. It was not until 1841 or 1866 that the site was first built upon for use as a Congregational Church. After its closure in 1938, the church was used for commercial purposes until quite recently. There is evidence for Palaeolithic, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and possibly Saxon activity having taken place close to the site, further east on South Way. Any pre-existing archaeological deposits within the site are most likely to be found in front of the church, beyond the footprint of the area substantially reduced to accommodate its basement. The building has no significant architectural features remaining from its use as a church, but does retain some internal and external features which it would be preferable to have retained during the redevelopment of the building.
