Abstract: |
Chris Butler Archaeological Services Ltd was commissioned by Eastbourne Homes Ltd (The Client) to carry out an archaeological Desk-based Assessment at Coventry Court, Seaside, Eastbourne, East Sussex, in order to establish the likely presence and importance of any archaeological remains that may be affected by the proposed development of new dwellings at the site. The site is situated on the edge of the Crumbles in a late 18th to early 19th century housing area. The documentary and map evidence suggests that there was little activity in the area before the construction of the tramway and subsequent industrial and occupational construction in the 18th and 19th century. There is no evidence for any earlier archaeological features or activity within the site. Its location on the Crumbles and close to the edge of the Levels possibly hints at the presence of archaeological remains in the broader landscape. |
