Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by North East Lincolnshire Council to carry out an archaeological evaluation at the former Riverhead Bus Station site at Freshney Place, Grimsby. A total of three trenches were excavated across the Site targeted on the projected line of the former medieval waterfront and wharf sides. The results of the evaluation revealed substantial alluvial deposits below heavily truncated probable medieval structures and layers. Evidence of early post-medieval walls and posts was revealed below the partial remains of 19th century buildings that fronted the former Haven and South Dock Streets. The evaluation also revealed that substantial demolition and ground reduction, up to at least 1.2m deep, had taken place during the construction of the current road surfaces. |
