Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of the Centre for Applied Archaeology, University College London, were commissioned by Madgwick and Dottridge Ltd. on behalf of their client, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundwork at 328 Coast Road, Pevensey Bay, BN24 6NU, East Sussex . The site was thought to have contained the remains of a lost Martello Tower built in the early 19th Century to meet the threat of invasion by Napoleon's France. The remains of a 19th Century Coastguard station were also thought to lie nearby. The work on site involved the removal of between 0.30 and 1.5m of free flowing beach gravel to enable the construction new dwelling. A line of three square timbers were observed which almost certainly were supports for the 20th Century house which was recently demolished. No sign of any earlier structures was observed. |
