Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief carried out by Archaeology South-East at the site Land to rear of 21 High Street, Lewes between November 2015 and May 2017. The fieldwork was commissioned by Natterjack Construction in advance of redevelopment of the land for housing. The excavation uncovered evidence of refuse pitting dating from the early medieval period through until the early post-medieval period, along with a small number of potential quarry pits later reused for the deposition of waste. The material present in the pits indicates the use of this area to dispose of more organic waste, further afield from the settlement focus. Quarrying is likely to have taken place for both chalk and the overlying head deposits. After this, at around AD1723 a vaulted cellar was constructed along with a two storey building directly above. Documentary evidence suggests that this was built for and funded by wine merchant Joel Paine. During the late 18th century additions were made to the north of the building, enlarging it by some third. These were, according to cartographic evidence, demolished between 1910 and 1938 when the area was turned to garden and a smaller northern building erected.
