Abstract: |
The watching brief revealed the partial layout of buildings that could be tentatively associated with the abbey of Cholsey founded in the 10th century, or with a later grange or lodge. Several massive wall foundations, some robbed, as well as internal divisions and changes plan can be discerned. Everything uncovered was preserved in situ, except a few post-holes which were excavated. Although the massive masonry walls are plausibly medieval, no real dating evidence was secured (medieval pottery was recovered but not directly associated with the walls). |
