Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out at Sand-le-Mere Caravan Park, East Riding of Yorkshire. Four of the nine excavated trenches contained archaeological remains representing discrete periods of activity. Up to three ring-ditches, and a number of pits, post-holes and linear ditches in Trench 4 contained handmade pottery of later Iron Age date and are suggested to represent the remains of a settlement of this period, possibly defined by an enclosure ditch. Trenches 8 and 9 contained features which are dated to the second half of the medieval period, and the presence of at least one cattle burial and other domestic waste suggests that there was probably a small settlement such as a farmstead in the vicinity. Trench 10 contained a dump of 19th-century waste, as well as some earlier residual material, which may represent agricultural activity associated with manuring and the use of 'night soil' in this period. The remaining trenches were devoid of archaeological remains. The strip and map monitored the removal of a concrete slab which covered the majority of the site. The removal of overburden confirmed that the slab had been deposited on a level terrace, cut into the sloping landscape prior to this scheme of works. The remains of a stone-capped brick culvert of post-medieval date, and a post-medieval lime-mortar bonded wall, constructed within the fill of an undated ditch were the only archaeological remains recorded. The wall was part of the foundation for a former outbuilding associated with Cliff Farm. Other than post-medieval bricks, no finds were recorded.
