Abstract: |
As part of an application for listed building consent and planning consent for the development of the Great Barn, Rectory Farm, Shillington Road, Pirton, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to create a record of the building in its present state. The Great Barn was built as a tithe barn in the 15th or early 16th century. It has remained in use as an agricultural barn until recent years. It is a 10-bay structure, measuring approximately 10m in width, 40m in length and 10m in height. The barn has undergone a number of changes over the centuries, including the replacement of the original wattle and daub panelling with brick noggin and the replacement of the thatched roof with ceramic tiles. The rebuilding of much of the east elevation and the replacement internal framing on the east side suggests that this side was subject to more rapid decay, possibly as a result of prevailing weather patterns. |
