Abstract:
In response to a planning condition on the demolition of an existing garage and its replacement on the same footprint by a new garage/workshop with an office at Beauchamps, Wyddial, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. The monitoring the groundworks for the new garage revealed a disturbed stratigraphy consisting of layers of made ground and demolition material overlying natural clay. A single cut feature, [205], was identified on the eastern side of the site. This extended beyond the depth of the footings trench and is likely to represent the footings to a range of now demolished post-medieval outbuildings. A service trench was excavated within the line of the backfilled moat, but only revealed the upper layers of modern backfill. The observations made during the present project support the cartographic evidence, which shows that the site was located across the southern end of a range of outbuildings, which stood until at least 1960. These were demolished between 1960 and 1977. By 1977, the southern end of the moat had been backfilled and the former garage constructed. No earlier features, finds or deposits were observed during this project.
