Abstract: |
In response to a planning condition on the construction of a new garage and an adjacent area of hardstanding for parking at the rear of The Garden House, Tewin Water, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to a greater understanding of the origins and development of Tewin from the prehistoric period onwards, with particular emphasis on evidence for prehistoric activity as seen in previous work immediately to the south of site (HER 9787). The works involved the monitoring of tree root removal, ground reduction across the footprint of the planned works and the excavation of footings trenches. The trench sections revealed modern topsoil above a clean subsoil, which overlay the natural substratum. No archaeological cut features, deposits or finds were encountered in the course of the project. |
