Abstract:
Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Prospect Archaeology on behalf of their client River Island to undertake an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching at 200-201 High Street in Lincoln. The site lies south of the historical core within an area of high potential for archaeological remains. Two small trial trenches were excavated within 201. Trench 1 nearest to the High Street revealed late post medieval brick buildings on an OD height of 5.62m. A cellar of a north south aligned building with red tile floor dates to 18th-19th century which incorporates a reused 13th-15th century tiled floor. It laid on top of layers dating 12th-14th century and was excavated to the depth of 5.35mOD. Augering displayed a continuation of non natural geological deposits. The first meter below ground surface within Trench 2 located to the rear of the building comprised deposits of post medieval date sealing a limestone structure no later than 16th century in date. A sondage was excavated to the maximum depth of 5.83mOD revealing 15th century deposits sealing a possible limestone structure of similar date. The earliest deposit contained a small amount of 12th-14th century finds. Further augering revealed a continuation of arcaheological depsoits. The evaluation has shown that a ground reduction within the proposed development area of 2.5m below ground surface would impact on archaeology of mid/late medieval to late post medieval date with the potential of imposing on earlier archaeology.
