Abstract: |
Archaeological Monitoring and Recording associated with the change of use from office to 2 No. dwellings with erection of a single storey extension with raised garden and associated works. Both nos. 5 & 6 form part of The Crescent, a uniform terrace of four-storey properties built in 1807 on a greenfield site. The 1840 Tithe map for Taunton represents the terrace with small frontages and long rear gardens and by the late 19th century, many of the properties had rear extensions including nos. 5 & 6. There is evidence that the extensions to both nos. 5 & 6 were removed in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The Crescent is also located a short distance from the medieval town and town defences. Despite this potential, monitoring of development excavations revealed no archaeological activity and no finds were recovered. |
