Abstract: |
This archaeological evaluation was carried out following the demolition of the buildings occupying 90-106 High Street, Staines in Surrey (central National Grid Reference: TQ 0362 7171; Figure 1). The work was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. and was commissioned by the Property Partners (Two Rivers) Limited. A number of phases of archaeological activity were recorded, which included evidence of Roman activity within the confines of the site followed by ground consolidation, pitting and ditch digging within the burgage plots that formerly occupied land to the rear of Staines High Street during medieval and post-medieval times. The finds recovered during the evaluation were dominated by 12-13th century remains, however three probable Roman features were also discovered along with a scatter of residual Roman material. Post-medieval to 20th century finds were also uncovered, demonstrating prolonged occupation in this area of Staines. |
