Abstract:
An archaeological excavation and watching brief was undertaken at Holy Trinity Church, Old Town, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire (SP 2010 5428). It was undertaken on behalf of Holy Trinity Church Parish Office, who is constructing an extension along the southern side of the church, for which a faculty has been obtained from Coventry Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and a planning application submitted to Stratford-upon-Avon District Council. The investigations excavated and lifted 304 burials of medieval to post-medieval date, although no structural remains or burials were identified to confirm the putative Saxon origins of the church. Few other features were identified during the archaeological works other than modern services, although four brick vaults and a brick shaft were encountered. Only one of the vaults was excavated as it had already been damaged and emptied by the insertion of a water pipe, as had the brick shaft. The osteological analysis of the inhumated remains appears to reflect the rural nature of Stratfordupon- Avon where industrialisation had a minimal impact on the size and nature of the settlement compared to many other places in the later post-medieval period. The analysis supports the documentary evidence from the post-medieval period which indicates that most males were employed in agricultural labour while females were domestic hands or officially unemployed. The stature of the assemblage, potentially an indicator of health status, remained constant from the medieval period for both males and females, although many diseases and conditions increased slightly from the medieval to post-medieval. However in comparison to other more industrial towns instances of disease remained low and the cleaner air, agricultural lifestyle and access to a good diet for many of the inhabitants has resulted in relatively healthy population.
