Abstract:
An evaluation and subsequent excavation was carried out at Kingston Gasworks. The occupation of the site by Gasworks since c 1896 has left the majority of natural brick earth contaminated. Construction of the Gasworks has removed any archaeological features that may have been present in the uppermost undisturbed natural ground over much of the site. Possibly for this reason, no evidence of Roman activity was found despite previous investigations documenting Roman finds and features c 100m and 150m to the west. A small amount of prehistoric pottery was recovered but is likely to be residual. Features that have survived are limited to a small number of 19th and 20th- century ditches, pits and a singular post hole which are most likely related to rural agricultural activity.
