Abstract:
The slab was broken out and cleared by contractors under MOLA supervision. The trench was then hand excavated by a member of the staff from MOLA. In addition, geoarchaeological auger holes were carried out on two pile locations. A timber obstruction was encountered during piling, this was reported by the contractor and a site visit was carried out in accordance with the Written Scheme of Investigation (MOLA 2016). The trench location and archaeological features were plotted on plans provided by the client using 'offset methodology' and subsequently tied to the OS grid by MOLA geomatics. Besides observation of contractors’ clearance works, a trench was excavated in the basement level and two geoarchaeological auger holes were bored. In the north-east of the trench a shallow cut, aligned east-west and truncating natural gravels, contained a large block of decayed oak timber in its western half – perhaps originally an off-cut used as a foundation pad or as a footing for temporary works. Remains of another probable timber pile were encountered in the south-east corner of the site. These features are most likely 20th-century, associated with construction of the present building.
