Abstract: |
Northern Archaeological Associates was commissioned to undertake a geophysical survey of land at (NGR 426542 535529). This survey is in support of an outline planning application for the development of 1.75 hectares of farmland. Clear results have been produced from the survey. The most prominent anomalies
correspond to an earthwork which can be seen running from east to west across the
site. The majority of the remaining anomalies appear to relate to agricultural practices
and to the general disturbance of the ground. It is possible that the ridge and furrow
responses and the areas of increased magnetic response may be masking potential
archaeology beneath. However, given the lack of previously recorded heritage assets
within the immediate proximity of the site, this is considered unlikely. The ridge and
furrow would indicate a lack of truncation through mineral extraction, which, given
the frequency of this within the wider area, was a possibility. |
