<summary>EDM surveys of two sites were carried out. These surveys recorded the most significant archaeological earthwork features identified during the initial rapid field survey and aerial photographic survey. The area in the vicinity of Borks Hill included various landscape features and a small platform which may have contained a building or barn. In the second area, at Tenley Farm, a small rectangular earthwork feature was recorded; this again possibly represented a small structure or barn, and was surrounded by landscape features. IB93 - This consisted of three trial trenches (1 located at the Estates Yard and 2 at Studforth Farm). Trench 1 (Estates Yard) was 10m by 1 m, Trenches 2 and 3 were 5m by 1m with each trench being excavated to a maximum depth of 1m or natural deposits. SFA06 - This consisted of 2 trial trenches and continued the number run from 1993. Trench 4 was 1m wide and 5m long with trench 5 measuring 2m by 2m. A single forty-litre bulk environmental sample was taken from a ditch fill and summitted for assessment. IB93 - The Estate Yard contained stratified Roman Deposits at approximately 0.5m. The metalled surface likely represents a Roman street surface located to the north of the forum. Trench 2 contained no Roman features likely due to possible terracing within the area of the farmyard. The upcast material along the southern end of trench 3 could potentially have been used to form the earthen rampart of the town defenses. The northern end contained evidence of a partially demolished structure. SFA06 - Both trenches demonstrated that within both the barn and the yard the archaeological deposits have been truncated with post-medieval surfaces directly overlying natural subsoil however both Roman and probable Medieval features were identified cut into the subsoil. Located within trench 4 was a Roman ditch which produced a rich assemblage of artefacts and biological remains.

Intensive field walking survey was undertaken as part of an archaeological assessment in advance of upgrading of the A1. Two sets of cropmarks had been identified outside of the route corridor, a third site, a ploughed down square earthwork, was situated inside the corridor. The presence of a flint concentration, and lack of Roman pottery, suggested a prehistoric date for the earthwork. The fieldwalking survey did not reveal the possible nature and extent of the two cropmark sites. [Au(abr)]
