Abstract:
This report presents the results of a geophysical survey that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land off Holywell Road, Cubert, Cornwall. The desk based assessment followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (CIfA 2014); and Understanding Place: Historic Area Assessments in a Planning and Development Context (English Heritage 2012). The geophysical survey followed the guidance that is outlined in: EAC Guidelines for the Use of Geophysics in Archaeology: Questions to Ask and Points to Consider (Europae Archaeologiae Consilium/European Archaeological Council 2016); and Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014). The geophysical survey identified 10 groups of anomalies. The anomalies that were identified included: two removed historic boundaries (Group 1 and Group 2) that were removed during the 19th century; 10 probable ditch and/or bank features that probably relate to field boundaries and that formed elements of the historic field system (Group 3 to Group 8); and eight possible pit, tree throw, or other natural features (Group 9). Agricultural activity in the form of ploughing was visible across the site and is represented by Group 10. The majority of the identified features represent undated phases of field system that are tentatively suggested as being Medieval and Post Medieval in date but with possible Prehistoric elements. Whilst no Prehistoric settlement features were identified within the boundaries of the site, the presence of such features within the immediate wider landscape would suggest that some of the ditch features (such as Group 5 to Group 8) may have formed part of a Prehistoric field system. Any development of the site is likely to encounter and to destroy any buried archaeological resource. The results of the geophysical survey would suggest that the archaeological potential for the site is moderate to low despite the high archaeological potential that is suggested by the surrounding Prehistoric landscape. The majority of the identified features are likely to reflect Medieval and Post Medieval field systems, however earlier Prehistoric and/or Romano-British features cannot be discounted. Further archaeological mitigation in the form of targeted archaeological evaluation trenching will likely be required to validate and to clarify the results of the geophysical survey.
