Abstract: |
A controlled topsoil strip was carried out within the Phase 10 area (10/3 and 10/4) at Arnhall Quarry, Edzell. This programme of works identified three pit features within the Phase 10/3 area. Previous work undertaken in 2017 identified twelve pit features within the adjoining Phase 10/2 area and forty-one pits within the Phase 9/2 and Phase 10/1 areas. There were no features identified within the Phase 10/4 area. The three identified pits were very similar in nature to those identified during the 2017 works. Two of these pits showed evidence of in situ burning suggesting that they were fire-pits. An environmental assessment identified oak fragments from these two fire-pits. Roundwood from one of these fire-pits was identified as being suitable for AMS dating. Pits from the Phase 9/2 area, which were very similar in nature, were AMS dated to the medieval period. |
