Abstract: |
In December 2020 Eden Heritage Ltd was commissioned by Bartle Country Homes Ltd to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey of land at Lawton House Farm, Lower Bartle, Lancashire (Ordnance Survey grid reference: SD 4897 3328). The archaeological work was required in association with a proposed residential development at the site, for which planning permission had been granted by Preston Council (Planning Reference 06/2017/1229). The assessment revealed that there are no recorded designated heritage assets in the vicinity of the proposed development area, and there is a low potential for archaeological remains to be present at the site predating the medieval period. A non-designated heritage asset, Lawton House (Asset 28) appears to have been constructed as an L-shaped farmhouse on the west side of the site prior to 1838. The name Lawton House was originally given to a property to the south of the proposed development area (Asset 5) which was in existence in the late 17th century. However, the earlier property had been demolished by 1848, the name then being given to the current house. Lawton House is not included within the proposed development. A range of late 19th century agricultural buildings were also noted to be present to the west of Lawton House. |
